Chatty Tuesday – Lets Go BANANAS

Last Journey to the West, an Immersive Game Theatre Experience.

This Chatty Tuesday is a really exciting one! It’s with Banana Effect, creators of Immersive Game Theatre Experiences.

Whilst immersive theatre is hugely popular and growing in the UK, America and many other European cities there isn’t much on offer in Hong Kong. It’s really exciting that Glitter and Gore is one of the leaders of bringing immersive and interactive experiences to Hong Kong but also pretty tough at times because people aren’t familiar with it. That’s why we love to support our fellow creators and hope that our small community will continue to grow bigger, better and more FUNtastic!

Eat bananas

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself

We are BANANA EFFECT. Most of us are from Hong Kong, but some of us are from the UK. We are a theatre group who are interested in games and interactive activities with audience. We love to eat bananas and say yes to adventure!

2. What do you do?

We started this immersive game theatre group 4 years ago. We are experimenting with ways to level up the experience to stimulate all five senses during a live performance in order to ignite a heartbeat, frame a feeling and make ripples in the audience’s life.

3. When did you discover your passion?

Since we were born. We know that theatre is our fate and games are our tools.

4. What do you love most about what you do?

We love to see the reaction of audience. They take a very important part in our shows. We can’t have a great show without their involvement, and they make every shows a unique and special one.

5. What/who inspires you to do what you do?

Escape Game. Andy Warhol. And for most of the time, we inspire each other!

6. What’s been your favourite piece/project that you’ve worked on?

“Last Journey to the West”. An adaptation of an old Chinese novel “Journey to the West.”

7. What’s been the most challenging piece/project so far?
“Last Journey to the West” ! This is the first time we try bilingual performance. Also first time having fight scene and killing scene in front of the audience.

Plus!!! First time setting our show in an apocalypse world…the world that we are not familiar with… but we could input a lot of creations. For example, the food are not what we use to eat. Letters are not written on papers. etc.

8. Can you take us on a brief journey of how you brought this project together?

First we found this very exciting story about a group of disciples who fight against different devils. Then we had 4 months workshops of playing games and doing creations about the future world. Eventually we spent a month to work on the adaptation of the script. Then we start our immersive theatre rehearsal.
At the same time, we have a design team who work on Set, Costume, Sound, Lighting, Props design.
And very soon, we will get into the real space and have the final performances ! ! !
In between rehearsals, sometimes we will get frustrated and struggle. We will then take a break and eat BANANAS.
‘Last Journey to the West’ is set to be a super interesting show that will spark thoughts, conversations and maybe even debates! Tickets for opening night, Friday 14th, are sold out but there’s still some available here for shows 15th and 16th September, at the awesome live music venue This Town Needs.
