Chatty Tuesday – Home Baker, Mooncake Maker

So it’s Mid-Autumn Festival and we thought that it would be awesome to chat to someone that makes mooncakes. Traditionally mooncakes were large cakes that got cut into smaller pieces and distributed amongst the family to show unity and family bonding. These days they are mostly bought in smaller portions and given as a whole cake.

Today we chat to Panny Pang who makes her own FUNtastic mooncakes at home!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Panny Pang I’m from Malaysia. I am a Flight Attendant at Cathay Dragon Airline.

I am a very active person, I have a lot of hobbies such as farming, cycling, muay thai and, of course, baking!

2. How long have you been in Hong Kong and what do you do?

I came to HK when I was 19 years old, so it’s already over 26 years! Cathay Dragon is my second job in HK.

3. How did you discover your passion?

Before I came to HK I absolutely can’t cook or bake. After few years I began to feel bored of the outside food so I decided to try cooking and baking myself.

Talent..maybe…? I have never paid for learning how to bake. Normally I just get the recipe from a website and try to do it myself!

4. What do you love most about baking?

I love to see my friends and family members enjoying the food I make!

5. What inspires you to do what you do?

As you know, recently, a lot of outside food is found unsafe to eat – too much chemical added into it and so on. Because of this uncertainty I try to avoid eating out and prefer to make the food myself.

My son inspires me to do more too! He is, now, 6 years old and I hope he can have more healthy food rather than eating all the junk food around.

6. What’s been your favourite project so far?

Before my son’s 4th birthday I would make a monthly birthday cake for him! But after 4 years old I stopped because it seemed he didn’t find cake very interesting anymore.

7. What’s been the most challenging thing so far?

I think it is something like mousse cake or anything soft that doesn’t need baking, I never have much success with those things.

8. How do you prepare for a baking session?

I make sure I have everything at home so that I can just bake anytime, whenever I want.

I am still pretty fresh in baking so there’s still a lot of things I want to bake or try. I love making mooncakes with my son, we bake together and it’s a family activity that I really enjoy!
